打ち合わせるとカンカンと、小気味よい音のなる道具であり、打楽器でもあります。
合図の為、芝居や音楽での拍子をとるため、また人々の注意を促すために使われてきました。
現代でも歌舞伎や相撲などで使用されており、日本文化と強い結びつきがあります。
また昭和の時代には紙芝居の始まりの合図や、「火の用心」と消防団の見回りで使われたイメージが強いでしょう。
祭囃子や演奏などの打楽器として使われることもあり、用途は様々です。
